<DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><P><SPAN>This dataset contains point features representing building locations of fire stations in the United States, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The purpose of this collection is to represent the fire station locations on general purpose cartographic products. The data includes manned fire stations and buildings from which a fire response occurs, such as a volunteer fire department building to which fire fighters report for duty, but which is not continuously manned. The data includes both private and governmental entities. In some cases, where fire stations are known to exist but could not be located on a specific building, such as on a military base, airport or manufacturing location, a point was placed at the entrance or the general center of the facility or complex. Some fire locations are approximate, most prevalently in rural areas. Fire training facilities are not included unless these locations also have an active fire station. Locations solely for storing or maintaining fire equipment, or fire stations without a permanent location, were generally excluded.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV>
To document the spatial location of fire stations in the U.S. for general cartographic purposes on USGS mapping products at 1:24,000 scale.

This data contains points for fire station buildings. The data includes both private and governmental entities. Some fire locations are approximate, most prevalently in rural areas. Fire training facilities are not included unless these locations also have an active fire station. Locations solely for storing or maintaining fire equipment, or fire stations without a permanent location, were generally excluded.
Volunteer submissions are randomly sampled and reviewed for attribute and spatial accuracy. Points edited by volunteers which failed automatic checks, such as for required information or formatting, are reviewed by USGS staff. All points marked for deletion by volunteers are reviewed by USGS staff. USGS staff primarily conduct internet research and use aerial imagery to confirm volunteer submissions. A full data review of all features is not conducted. Past accuracy tests based on random samples of volunteer submissions found a 90-95% accuracy range for location of a point and name of a feature. Errors of omission were not tested.
Horizontal accuracy is based on accuracy of imagery used to verify location, generally at NAIP accuracy or better. No formal accuracy tests were performed on the data.

Fire station data collected and distributed to State agencies by Technigraphics, Inc. Data content was collected generally from 2006-2009. Most State agencies voluntarily provided these data to USGS between 2010-2013. This data served as the base for the NSD fire station layer until August 2013, when the USGS TNMCorps crowdsourcing project exposed the fire station data nationwide for volunteer editing.

Point data from the National Structures Dataset (NSD) is exposed to TNM Corps volunteers using an online map editor (https://edits.nationalmap.gov/tnmcorps/). Volunteers can use the editor to create points for missing data, update existing point attribution, move points using map and image backgrounds, or delete features which are no longer valid. Volunteers may use personal knowledge or conduct internet research to located and update attribution. Attributes of edited points are checked with automated filters to find common formatting and spelling errors. Points which fail automatic filter checks and all points marked for deletion by volunteers are reviewed by USGS staff. Edited data is ingested into the NSD through an internal process. This dataset is subject to constant change as points are reviewed and updated by volunteers.
